So, you've just done your GROWTH MINDSET assessment and you've read your profile.
And you may be wondering what it all means?
Well, you may be interested to learn that back in 2006, following decades of research, Dr Carol Dweck and her team at Stanford University released a book called Mindset which totally changed our understanding about personal development.
Essentially, she proposes that there are two types of mindset which people could have: a growth mindset or a fixed mindset.
Her research revealed those with growth mindsets believe that their talents and abilities can be developed through effort, good teaching and persistence. As a result, they see most things as opportunities to learn. They listen to feedback and they learn from those around them. Essentially, they get better results. People with growth mindsets tend to be more successful in their careers as they try new things and are prepared to push themselves out of their comfort zones. They use language like "Let's have a go", "Why not?" "How do I learn to do this?"
In contrast, those with fixed mindsets believe that their basic abilities, intelligence and talents are set. They have a certain amount of each and that's that. As a result, they give up easily. They don't push themselves out of their comfort zones. Their growth potential is hindered in the long term. They use language like, "I could never do that" "We've always done it this way"
We think there's the potential for another mindset too which Carol Dweck doesn't mention, based upon our experience, we believe that people are not always one or always the other, we believe that people can have a blend of a growth and a fixed mindset, depending on particular circumstances or at specific times of their lives. So, we have called this the Mixed Mindset.
If we want to be successful, we should aspire towards developing a Growth Mindset more of the time, the great news is, is that it is something that can be achieved, and coaching can help to do this, as coaching is all about asking questions to raise self-awareness, thinking differently by looking at things from a different perspective and putting new behaviours into practice to create long term change.
So, we've carefully chosen specific micro-coaching exercises and challenges to help you work on further developing your MINDSET.
And remember, throughout the module, you can make commitments to yourself to start to do some things differently.
So, why not make a start now.
